Summer Bank Holiday (Scotland)

The Summer Bank Holiday in Scotland takes place on the first Monday of August, serving as an official public holiday across the region. Unlike England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, which observe their late summer bank holiday at the end of August, Scotland has preserved the original early August date established in the 19th century.

The August Bank Holiday was originally introduced throughout the United Kingdom under the Bank Holidays Act 1871, spearheaded by politician and banker Sir John Lubbock. Designed to give bank workers a statutory rest day during the summer, the holiday was initially fixed on the first Monday of August for all four home nations.

During the mid-1960s, the UK government trialled moving the holiday to the end of August in England and Wales to extend the holiday season and ease road congestion. When this shift was formally enacted under the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971, Scotland chose to retain the traditional first Monday of August, creating the distinction that persists today.

Because Scottish school summer holidays end earlier in August than those in England and Wales, the Summer Bank Holiday serves as a final long weekend for family outings before the autumn term begins. People across Scotland often spend the day visiting national parks, coastal towns, and historic sites, or attending local Highland games. The holiday also regularly coincides with the opening weekend of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the Edinburgh International Festival, bringing substantial crowds and street performances to the capital.
