About Early May Bank Holiday

The Early May Bank Holiday, observed on the first Monday of May, is a nationwide public holiday across the United Kingdom. It signals the arrival of spring and provides a three-day weekend for relaxation, outdoor events, and traditional community gatherings.

History

While spring celebrations such as May Day have ancient roots in pre-Christian festivities, the Early May Bank Holiday as an official UK-wide public holiday is a relatively recent creation. Scotland had observed a May Day bank holiday since 1871 under the original Bank Holidays Act, but it was not extended to England, Wales, and Northern Ireland until more than a century later.

The official UK-wide holiday was announced in 1976 by the Employment Secretary, Michael Foot, fulfilling a long-standing recommendation from the trade union movement. First observed nationwide on 1 May 1978, the holiday has since taken place on the first Monday of the month, though it has occasionally been rescheduled to align with major national anniversaries.

Traditions & Celebrations

The long weekend brings together traditional British folk customs and contemporary leisure pursuits. Many towns and villages hold springtime fairs featuring Morris dancing, maypole dancing, and the crowning of a May Queen. Because it offers a three-day break, millions of people use the holiday to visit garden centres, undertake home improvement projects, explore the countryside, or travel for short domestic holidays.
