St Patrick's Day

St Patrick's Day, celebrated annually on 17 March, honours the patron saint of Ireland and Irish culture. While observed with festivities throughout the United Kingdom, it is an official public holiday specifically in Northern Ireland.

Saint Patrick was a fifth-century Christian missionary and bishop who became the primary patron saint of Ireland. Born in Roman Britain, he was captured by Irish raiders at the age of sixteen and taken to Ireland as an enslaved worker. After escaping six years later, he returned to his family, entered the clergy, and eventually returned to Ireland to spread Christianity, integrating indigenous Celtic customs into his teaching.

The date of 17 March commemorates the traditionally accepted date of Saint Patrick's death in the late fifth century. Originally established as a solemn feast day in the liturgical calendar during the early seventeenth century, the occasion gradually transformed over centuries into a global celebration of Irish culture, music, and identity.

In Northern Ireland, the day is marked by colourful community parades, live traditional music sessions, street performance carnivals, and ceilidhs in urban centres such as Belfast and Derry. Many people attend morning church services before taking part in civic events. Wearing green attire, pinning a sprig of shamrock to one's lapel, and socialising in local venues are widespread practices. Although 17 March is not a bank holiday in England, Scotland, or Wales, popular cultural events and themed musical performances take place across Great Britain.
